Mikulaš day

0

Tuesday was Mikulaš day or Santa Claus day in Slovakia. This is the official start to Christmas in Slovakia. On the eve of Mikulaš day, Santa comes to all the houses and inspects the shoes (not Stockings) that children have left in the window of their home. If the shoes are polished nice and they have been good then they recieve candy and fruit, if they have been bad they receive coal or a willow switch. Santa Claus is accompanied by a demon and an angel. The demon tries to stop him and do evil while the angel helps him give gifts to the children. Of course the demon loves it when they put coal or a willow switch in the shoe. This is the legend anyway. On Mikulaš day, there was the opening of the town’s Christmas Market, which is an outdoor market with food and drinks and music. I attended the opening with the Poloha’s. As I thought about writing this blog I relaized that it could be good to tell you all a little more about the Poloha’s .

Draho is from Slovakia but lived most of his
early life in Serbia. When he was older he moved
back to Slovakia. Zuzka was born and grew up
in Bratislava (the Capitol of Slovakia). They have
been working for TCKompas (Josiah Venture Slo-
vakia) since 1999. It was at Kompas that they
met and eventually married. Draho has worked
in almost every ministry of Kompas over the
years and has been working in Kompas longer
than any one else currently working. One of the
major programs he was the Director of, before
changing to Fusion this year, was KPM, which
is a youth leadership conference and is the biggest
in Central Europe. They have three children Oliver,
Johanna, and Victor. Draho is a great discipler
of young men and is also a talented musician,
who is often asked to lead worship at many
functions. Before working for Kompas he was a
graphic designer. Zuzka is obviously a mother
but is also trying to finish her degree in
Physical therapy. She also teaches English to
young children. I hope this gives you a better
idea of who I work with. If you have any questions
about the Poloha’s please write to me!
